]]> Ms Chunjing Zhao, doctoral student at Polymer Materials, is winner of the INEOS Styrolution Award. Ms Zhao received the first-ever award from the world’s leading supplier of styrenic plastics for her master’s thesis on improving the thermal insulation properties of foamed plastics, entitled: “Influences of Supramolecular Additives on the Morphology and Properties of Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foams”.

Dr Norbert Nießner, Director Global R&D/Intellectual Property at INEOS Styrolution Group GmbH, justified the award by saying: “Ms Zhao’s work shows the construction industry a way to make the thermal insulation of buildings more effective and thus lead to energy savings. Her results may well make an important contribution to greater sustainability.”

INEOS Styrolution has been working closely with the University of Bayreuth and Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH in the field of styrene polymers for more than five years.

The award, which comes with prize money, was presented to the successful scientist by Dr. Norbert Nießner and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Altstädt, who supervised the award-winning work, at INEOS Styrolution’s headquarters in Frankfurt a.M. on 12 December 2018.

]]> The Scientific Working Group of University Professors of Plastics Engineering (WAK) annually awards prizes to the best scientific papers in plastics engineering. The aim is both to document important advances in the science and technology of plastics, and to motivate and support young engineers in their scientific work. The prize money in the dissertation category is 5000 €. The prizes are provided by four innovative plastics technology companies.

  • Wilfried-Ensinger-Award for the development and description of engineering plastics for innovative applications
  • Oechsler-Award for methods and approaches in the development and design of components made of plastics
  • Brose-Award for new processes and techniques in the processing of plastics
  • Röchling-Award for new hybrid materials, systems, and process technology based on plastics

At the 41st meeting of WAK, which was held on 21.10.19 as part of the international K trade fair in Düsseldorf, Dr.-. Ing. Ronak Bahrami received the Wilfried-Ensinger-Preis 2019 for her dissertation entitled “Fracture Mechanics of Nanostructured Polymer Blends with Janus Particles”. Dr. Bahrami was a doctoral student at the Polymer Materials research group (Prof. Dr.-Ing. V. Altstädt) at the University of Bayreuth from December 2011 to June 2016.

Ms Uhm had been with us as a technician since the founding of the research group. She was a popular, always friendly, good-humoured, and committed team member. We are deeply saddened by her sudden death and will always honour her memory.
